2011 Volkswagen Jetta: Revealed

Cliff Murphy Posted by: Cliff Murphy in Latest |

HERNDON, Virginia — Information and pictures of the fully redesigned 2011 Volkswagen Jetta leaked onto the Internet today ahead of the car's official premiere set for tomorrow in New York City.

According to Volkswagen, the new Jetta measures 182.7 inches long, 57.1 inches tall and 70.1 inches wide. The overall length is 3.5 inches longer than the current model, which results in an unspecified increase in the Jetta's wheelbase.

The engine lineup will remain largely unchanged. For now, Volkswagen has only confirmed the 2.0-liter TSI and 2.0-liter TDI engines that are currently used in the Jetta. Manual transmissions will be standard across the board and a six-speed DSG will be optional on the 2.0-liter engines.

There will be five versions of the Jetta in the U.S. — S, SE, SEL, TDI and GLI. Sales are expected to begin in October, with pricing set to start around $16,000, according to Volkswagen.  (source: insideline)

Volkswagen Golf Electric Vehicle To Arrive in 2013

Cliff Murphy Posted by: Cliff Murphy in Latest |

BERLIN — Volkswagen says it will put an all-electric Golf into its lineup as part of the seventh generation of the hardy perennial, coming out in 2013. The Golf Blue e-motion in concept form was rolled out in front of dignitaries including the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, this week at a summit meeting on electric vehicles.

As a preview to large-scale production, VW says it will put a test fleet of 500 Golf EVs on roads next year, in large part to test and perfect the energy storage modules and drivetrain.

The production Golf Blue e-motion will have a 113-horsepower electric motor that makes 199 pound-feet of torque "right from a stop" and a 26.5-kw lithium-ion battery. The electric Golf will have an 87-mph top speed and a 93-mile driving range.

VW's plan for 2013 is to bring out the Up Blue e-motion city car first, followed by a Golf Blue e-motion and a Jetta Blue e-motion. At the same time, the automaker will launch the Lavida Blue e-motion in China. In hybrid plans, VW will bring out a hybrid Jetta in 2012 and Golf and Passat hybrids in 2013.

Volkswagen showed a concept zero-emissions Berlin Taxi that it said could become a "highly coveted" product in Berlin, New York, Beijing, London, Moscow and other major cities. The taxi is still a "pure concept," VW emphasized.

VW also called for a "national platform for electric mobility" at the summit, saying the German auto industry should focus on bringing out zero-emission vehicles and getting an infrastructure in place to support their use. The German government has said it wants to see a million EVs on German roads by 2020.

Volkswagen has stated an ambitious goal: "To use bestsellers such as the Golf to take electric vehicles out of their niche-model status and become the market leader for a new type of sustainable mobility by 2018."

Volkswagen asks developers to design next-gen. infotainment systems

Cliff Murphy Posted by: Cliff Murphy in Latest |

Volkswagen is taking a page from the Apple playbook by inviting software developers to help shape the face of the automaker's infotainment systems. The German manufacturer is holding an "App My Ride" contest where anyone can submit an application that they think would work well in future VW products. The ultimate goal is to put a little more control into the hands of the company's customers in order to create an infotainment system that's functional and easy to use, but there's also around $18,600 worth of prizes on the table for the best apps.

On May 3rd, VW will launch a new web site where users can upload their apps and submit ideas. Volkswagen is hoping that a collaborative community will spring from the project where developers can discuss apps the company currently uses as well as hone their concepts.
In order to jump into the fray, you'll need to come up with an idea for your very own app, a graphic design of the user interface and the appropriate programming in Adobe Flash or Flex. As part of the contest, VW is offering winning students a unique opportunity to study with the Volkswagen Research Group in Tokyo, Shanghai, California or Wolfsburg.

Winners will be picked by the "App My Ride" community and a panel of VW execs. One lucky developer will get to take part in a special vehicle unveil with their flight and hotel on the Volkswagen tab on top of cash prizes. Make the jump for the full press release. (source: AutoBlog)

2010 Jetta TDI vs 2010 Toyota Prius

Cliff Murphy Posted by: Cliff Murphy in Latest |

alt

By Thom Cannel
Detroit Bureau
The Auto Channel

Our week long test of a Volkswagen Jetta TDI is a reaction to the newest Prius hybrid from Toyota. We wondered, after achieving an extremely artificial 71.3 mpg in a 2010 Prius, how Prius would compare to a Volkswagen Jetta TDI turbo-diesel driven normally. Thus our real-world excursion from Michigan to New York where, upon arriving in Manhattan, the in-dash computer said we’d sipped fuel at the rate of 50.3 miles per gallon. Driven normally, we would expect a Prius to deliver 60 mpg making fuel economy a virtual tie; the difference in fuel per 10,000 miles would be 23 gallons.

Of course if you’re driving in Manhattan exclusively, or anywhere most miles are driven in very slow stop-start traffic, the Prius would be a great choice (diesels also excel under these conditions). As to the artificial nature of our Prius test, we accelerated tricycle-slowly to 10 mph under any posted limit, coasted whenever possible while "avoiding" stop signs and stop lights, and turned off the air conditioning. Nothing normal at all.

To offer a mainstream driving experience we zeroed the trip odometer, filled the new blue Jetta with fuel and logged 140 miles of regular suburban commuting. You know the drill, the usual grocery runs and hops onto local freeways, daily trips to the mall or local YMCA, and then a full-on single day blast to the Big Apple.

From Michigan to Ohio the road is relatively flat, but I-80 through eastern Ohio and Pennsylvania sucks fuel with every hill. This is where the diesel excels. With 236 pound-feet of torque and 140 horsepower (Prius delivers 105 pound-feet of torque and 98 horsepower) the Jetta never lost a single RPM and never ever felt stressed, or even hard worked. On the drive we kept the speedometer pegged at roughly 8 miles over the posted limit, so we were not attempting any kind of fuel economy run. Our only concession to fuel economy was the same kind of driving techniques that most Americans developed when fuel hit $4 per gallon; no jack-rabbit starts and somewhat less-aggressive throttle application. In contrast, our behavior while driving the Prius struck bicyclists as slow!

It’s the engine that makes the Jetta TDI special. Europeans embraced diesels decades ago because of diesel’s inherently greater fuel economy and later as a lower CO2 emitter. In the US, California focused emissions standards on photochemical pollutants endemic to Los Angeles. With the introduction of low-sulfur fuel the problem of soot (particulate emissions) became easier to control. Diesels are naturally low emitters of hydrocarbons, modern engines even more so. However reducing oxides of nitrogen (NOx) is a major technological problem. Volkswagen, and Audi, use a device that traps nitrous oxide and later consumes it in an exothermic reaction. It is literally burnt off. VW says this technology is applicable in engines up to approximately 2 liters, the displacement of their newest Clean Diesel four-cylinderengine. For V-6 engines the company uses a different system that injects urea into the exhaust stream where it chemically alters nitrous oxide into water vapor. Similar systems are used for all larger diesel engines in the US, regardless of manufacturer.

On the trip we refueled in Pennsylvania and were surprised that the old bugaboo of stinky hands after refueling has disappeared! It must be that stinky hands, stinky exhaust, and the smoke was caused by the aromatic sulfur in US fuels. Now that low-sulfur fuels are here, that nasty chemical aroma is just gone.

Driving in New York City required “brisk” cut-and-thrust driving just to get from A to B in any timely fashion. Hot tip; never activate a turn signal! Stop-and-start driving should have ruined our fuel economy but, upon returning to Michigan, the trip computer read 48.5 miles per gallon. That was our real world experience, from skirmishes in densely populated Manhattan, to pacific urban transport, to high-speed freeway driving while never, ever, focusing on maximizing fuel economy, almost 50 miles to each gallon of fuel. As a data point the official EPA estimate is 28 mpg for city driving and 40 mpg on the highway.

Our conclusion is that small displacement diesels do have a place in our vehicle mix because of their greater torque. VW’s 2.0-liter TDI could easily power a small pickup or Tiguan-sized SUV and offer better payload and towingcapacity than larger, less fuel efficient V-6 engines. Most major automobile makers make diesel engines, though some are cooperatively produced. Even though diesels must be more expensive to comply with emissions regulations we would like to have a choice; not everyone buys, or leases, a new vehicle every three years and the 3-5 year payback on diesels makes sense for many. Manufacturers, please let us make that decision.

2010 Jetta, Golf, Passat & Tiguan Honored with TOP SAFETY PICK Award

Cliff Murphy Posted by: Cliff Murphy in Latest |

alt

HERNDON, Va., - Four 2010 Volkswagen models - the brand-leading Jetta sedan, the all-new Golf four-door, the stylish Passat sedan, and the nimble Tiguan - have each received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK award for 2010: The highest rating possible from the non-profit research organization. The annual award recognizes those vehicles that perform best in protecting passengers in the Institute's front, side, and rear crash test evaluations, and the newly required roof-strength test evaluations. The Institute only tests vehicles with electronic stability control (branded Electronic Stabilization Program® / ESP® on Volkswagen vehicles), and head protection airbags.

"TOP SAFETY PICKS are the vehicles on the top rung for safety," said IIHS president, Adrian Lund. "These Volkswagen models are in an elite group that afford the best protection in the most common kinds of crashes, and have electronic stability control to keep drivers out of many crashes altogether."

"The safety of our cars is of the utmost concern, from the initial design stages, all the way through to the maintenance procedures at dealerships," said Mark Barnes, COO, Volkswagen Group of America. "To have such an important group as the IIHS recognize not one, but a total of four Volkswagen vehicles with this prestigious award is a true testament to the care, safety, and precision we strive for with every Volkswagen we build."

Beyond their fun-to-drive dynamics and fuel-efficient engines, every 2010 model year Volkswagen vehicle includes, as standard, Volkswagen's Prevent and Preserve Safety System. Composed of more than 40 different features, the Prevent and Preserve Safety System helps keep drivers and passengers safe during normal driving conditions, and reduces the severity and consequences of a possible crash. The Jetta, Golf, Passat, and Tiguan also come standard with an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), ESP, up to eight airbags (depending on model), and more.

In addition to the Prevent and Preserve Safety System, the entire 2010 Volkswagen lineup includes the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. With it, all of the scheduled maintenance for the vehicle, as described in its maintenance booklet, is covered for the length of the New Vehicle Warranty -- three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta sedan (starting at $17,605), Golf four-door (starting at $19,190), Passat sedan (starting at $26,995), and Tiguan (starting at $23,200) are available now at Volkswagen dealerships across the U.S.
